Knights Radiant Orders, Surges, oaths, spren. The Stormlight Archive magic system is beautifully complex, but the first time someone tried to explain Surgebinding to me, I completely glazed over. Ten Orders, ten Surges, each Order shares Surges with its neighbors, there’s a diagram that looks like a figure-eight… too much, too fast.
Then the Double Eye of the Almighty clicked. The entire system is encoded in that one diagram from the front of The Way of Kings. Every Order, every Surge, every connection; it’s all right there if you know how to read it.
The Coppermind wiki does an incredible job documenting all of this (seriously, that community is amazing), but I wanted to bring the Double Eye to life as something you can actually interact with. Click any Order to see its Surges, oaths, spren, and notable characters. Click any Surge to see which two Orders share it. The connections light up as you explore, because Surgebinding is all about connections.
Spoilers for all five Stormlight Archive books, including Wind and Truth.

The Double Eye of the Almighty
Surgebinding is the magic system of Roshar, powered by Stormlight. Ten Orders of Knights Radiant each bond a type of spren and gain access to two of the ten fundamental Surges, the forces that govern the world. Click any Order or Surge in the diagram below to explore.
In Short: Quick Answers
What is Surgebinding in Stormlight Archive?
Surgebinding is the primary magic system in the Stormlight Archive. Knights Radiant bond with spren, sentient fragments of Honor and Cultivation’s Investiture, and gain the ability to manipulate fundamental forces called Surges. Each Radiant can use two Surges, determined by their Order. The magic is fueled by Stormlight, which characters absorb from highstorms or infused spheres. Unlike Mistborn’s Allomancy, where different metals grant different powers, Surgebinding is all about the bond between Radiant and spren, and progressing through oaths to unlock more of that power.
How many Knights Radiant Orders are there?
There are 10 Knights Radiant Orders, each bonded to a different type of spren and commanding two of the ten Surges:
- Windrunners — Adhesion & Gravitation (bonded to honorspren)
- Skybreakers — Gravitation & Division (bonded to highspren)
- Dustbringers — Division & Abrasion (bonded to ashspren)
- Edgedancers — Abrasion & Progression (bonded to cultivationspren)
- Truthwatchers — Progression & Illumination (bonded to mistspren)
- Lightweavers — Illumination & Transformation (bonded to Cryptics)
- Elsecallers — Transformation & Transportation (bonded to inkspren)
- Willshapers — Transportation & Cohesion (bonded to lightspren)
- Stonewards — Cohesion & Tension (bonded to peakspren)
- Bondsmiths — Tension & Adhesion (bonded to the Stormfather, Nightwatcher, or Sibling)
Notice the pattern: the Orders form a circle where each shares one Surge with the Order next to it. That’s the Double Eye of the Almighty. Click through the explorer above to see it in action.
What are the Knights Radiant oaths?
Every Order shares the First Ideal: “Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.” After that, each Order swears unique oaths reflecting their values. Windrunners swear to protect: “I will protect those who cannot protect themselves.” Skybreakers commit to the law. Edgedancers remember the forgotten: “I will remember those who have been forgotten.” Lightweavers are unique; instead of speaking traditional oaths, they speak deeply personal truths about themselves.
The oaths aren’t just words. Speaking them at the right moment unlocks new Surgebinding abilities, which is why those scenes in the books hit so hard. Each Order has five Ideals total, though not all have been revealed yet in the series.
What are the 10 Surges?
The 10 Surges are the fundamental forces that Knights Radiant can manipulate:
- Adhesion — binding things together, manipulating pressure
- Gravitation — manipulating gravity (this is what Lashing is)
- Division — controlling destruction and decay
- Abrasion — controlling friction (Lift sliding on everything)
- Progression — growth and healing (Renarin’s specialty)
- Illumination — creating light and sound illusions (Shallan’s Lightweaving)
- Transformation — Soulcasting, changing one material into another
- Transportation — moving between the Physical and Cognitive Realms
- Cohesion — manipulating molecular bonds in objects
- Tension — controlling the stiffness and rigidity of objects
Each Surge is shared by exactly two Orders. Gravitation, for example, belongs to both Windrunners (Kaladin) and Skybreakers (Szeth), but their second Surge is different, which gives each Order its own combat style and personality. The explorer above shows all these Knights Radiant orders and powers visually.
Which Knights Radiant Order is the best?
There’s no “best” Order. Sanderson has said the Orders aren’t about power levels but about what you value. Windrunners protect. Edgedancers care for the overlooked. Lightweavers seek truth through creativity. Elsecallers pursue their own potential. Bondsmiths unite.
That said, if you’re curious which Order fits your personality, Sanderson’s official quiz on brandonsanderson.com is surprisingly well-designed. And honestly, most people find they resonate with the Order they’d least expect. (I was sure I’d get Windrunner. I did not get Windrunner.)
